The project
A Cambridge college needed to replace the ageing gas-fired heating system at its Estates and Maintenance offices. The brief was to reduce reliance on fossil fuel heating and improve comfort for the people working there, without bringing the occupied building to a standstill.
We installed two air source heat pumps and Jaga fan-assisted radiators throughout the building as part of a complete heating system upgrade. The radiators were chosen to work with the new system and help deliver comfortable heating efficiently. The installation also allows for light comfort cooling during warmer periods.
Unlike an empty building awaiting fit-out, these offices remained in use while the work took place. That made the day-to-day programme just as important as the equipment itself. Our team phased the installation and kept in regular contact with building users so they knew what work was happening and when. We planned each stage around the needs of the occupied space, with the aim of keeping disruption to a minimum.
The choice of fan-assisted radiators was part of the overall approach, not a separate finishing detail. Paired with the heat pumps, they help the upgraded system serve the offices while offering light comfort cooling. That made it possible to address both the ageing plant and the day-to-day needs of the people using the building.
The completed system provides a modern heating solution for the offices, with light comfort cooling when needed. Replacing the ageing gas-fired system with air source heat pumps helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels, while the fan-assisted radiators support comfortable working conditions. It is a practical upgrade that meets the building’s needs today and supports the college’s wider sustainability objectives.
