The project
During a major renovation and extension in Boxworth, the homeowners wanted their property to make better use of renewable energy. The brief was to bring heating, electricity generation and storage together as part of the wider build, rather than adding separate systems once the work was finished.
We installed an air source heat pump with a dedicated plant room, a 25 kW in-roof solar PV system and 15 kWh of battery storage. The heat pump provides heating and hot water, while the solar panels generate electricity on site. Battery storage allows some of that electricity to be kept for later use.
Timing mattered because the installation formed part of a substantial refurbishment involving multiple trades and phases of construction. We worked with the wider project team to plan plant space, service routes and the infrastructure each system would need. The in-roof solar installation also needed particular attention so that it sat flush with the renovated property’s roof.
Planning these systems during the renovation meant their requirements could be considered alongside the rest of the property’s design. Space for the heat pump plant and routes for the connected services were discussed with the other trades, while the in-roof panels could be incorporated into the finished roof rather than simply mounted above it.
The completed home brings the three technologies together in one all-electric energy solution. Generating and storing electricity on site gives the household more opportunity to use its own renewable power, while the heat pump provides a lower-carbon alternative for heating. It is a future-ready installation designed to fit both the home and the way its owners plan to use it.
